Putting down the turf:

Now that the mountain was ready, landscaping the main layout came next.

I used my Woodland Scenics Foam Knife to even out the surface of the foam putty roadway where needed to allow my track to make contact with the ground. (In case you're interested, the Foam Knife is like an X-Acto knife with a two and a quarter inch blade.)

After cleaning up the roadway, I painted the
edges of the roadway with diluted Gray Stone
from the Earth Color Kit, and added a little
Burnt Umber here and there for variety.

Then I drew a line to separate the parking lot
and circus area, which I wanted to be covered
with dry grass, from the southwest corner which was to be covered with green grass.

I painted the parking lot and circus areas
with Woodland Scenics Earth Undercoat. The green grassy corner and the region between the right end of the track and the mountain was painted with Green Undercoat.

Because I wasn't sure what size "grass"
would be appropriate to apply, I got Fine
Turf from Woodland Scenics in the Green
Grass and Yellow Grass colors.  These come
in large plastic shaker bottles. The holes
in the shaker looked large enough to
dispense rather more generous amounts of
turn than I wanted, so I picked up a set of
"Range Top Salt and Pepper Shakers" from
WalMart. These not only had the advantage of
smaller shaker openings, but the tops of
each can be rotated to close the openings.

I painted over the brown area with Scenic
Cement and dusted on a layer of Yellow
Grass Fine Turf. Then I painted over the
green areas, as well as the flat regions at the ends of the mountain, with more Scenic Cement and dusted on a layer of the Green Grass Fine Turf.

My wife, Janet, suggested that dusting with Fine Turf might be an outside job. Fortunately, the day was nice and not particularly breezy for working out on our front porch

I think that a single layer of the Yellow Grass was sufficient - I don't want much grass around the circus.  But the green area seemed a bit thin. So I brushed on more Scenic Cement and dusted on a second layer of Green Grass. I wasn't sure that all of the second layer of grass was held by the Scenic Cement, so I used the Scenic Sprayer to go over it with more Scenic Cement.  The Scenic Sprayer does not adjust easily and the best spray I could get was rather juicy, but it did the trick.
